-Greater Arid-land Katydid-
-This is a large, brightly colored katydid of family Tettigoniidae. Native to the Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico. They emerge in early Spring and grow quckly, reaching adulthood and sexual maturity in mid-Summer. They reproduce quickly, females deposit eggs, and then the adults perish by early to late Autumn. This univoltine reproductive behavior is common in many Orthoptera.
-While these katydids live in hot dry semi-arid regions, they congregate in areas of vegetation. Predominantly within Oak and Juniper stands, or Mesquite brushland. They are oppurtunistic predators and will feed on anything they can subdue. They will also sample small bits of fruit, or sap from wounded vegetation.
-Females are slightly larger and display a long ovipositer. Males have rounded, truncated abdomens. Total adults size is generally 2-2.5". Females can stretch to over 6" with the ovipositer.
